Rochester, N.Y. - A week-long celebration and acknowledgement of the many services the Navy performs got underway Monday as the city kicked off "Navy Week 2011".
Mayor Tom Richards and County Executive Maggie Brooks signed a proclamation at City Hall. The two leaders were joined by Admiral Donald Quinn and members of the Navy Band, who offered a preview of some of the events to come this week.
"This is our chance to show off your investment in your Navy," Donald Quinn said as he addressed those gathered at City Hall. "We’re engaged around the world at this time, and we want to share the skills and abilities of our sailors this week." Mayor Richards, who served four years in the Navy himself, expressed his pride and excitement for Navy Week by saying "I’m a great believer in the Navy, and it’s a great experience for people. I’m very pleased to salute Navy Week."
Rochester was one of 21 cities nationwide chosen to host Navy Week 2011. Each day this week will feature special events and concerts involving members of the Navy, such as Navy Band concerts, college days, and addresses from naval officers around the Rochester area. Navy Week culminates with an air show performed by the esteemed Blue Angels at the Greater Rochester International Airport on Saturday and Sunday.
"This event, in many ways, represents and underscores the values and the character that we embrace as a community," said Maggie Brooks. "This is a very proud week for us."
