Anti-Morelle Robo-Calls a Mystery (Updated)

Update at end of post.

Someone is targeting Joe Morelle with robo-calls, and they may be coming from people in his own party.

The first one targets his record on taxes:

“Joe Morelle raised our taxes and increased fees 37 times. That’s over $11 billion out of taxpayers’ pockets. Now he wants us to believe he’s fighting for lower taxes in Albany? Gimme a break. Joe Morelle can’t help solve the problem. He’s part of the problem. If you’ve had enough, call 467-0410 and tell Joe Morelle we can’t afford his tax increases.”

In response to the robo-call, Morelle said on his Facebook page, “The fact is I voted against last year’s State budget specifically because it raised taxes and spent too much. And again this year, I am in Albany fighting hard to ensure there are no tax increases in the budget and instead it provides a plan for the Upstate economy to recover and thrive.”

Here’s the second call:

“Joe Morelle has proposed legislation that would force people to submit their DNA to police when they’re arrested. That’s right not when they’re convicted, when they’re arrested. Joe Morelle has abandoned our progressive values and believes we’re guilty until proven innocent. If Joe Morelle doesn’t believe in our human rights, why should we believe in him? Call Joe Morelle at 467-0410 and tell him that you value your civil liberties even if he doesn’t.”

The DNA legislation is detailed here.

The “progressive values” phrase in the call is the first clue that the GOP is probably not behind this effort. I suppose it could be a Republican smokescreen, but more than a few Dems suspect the attack is coming from anti-mayoral control groups or someone who wants to primary Morelle.

Update:

Morelle's staff member gave me this statement from the assemblyman. Sorry for the delay in getting it posted.

“Recently I've taken stands on school governance reform and public safety that have angered certain special interests. My only interest, as always, is to fight for the issues that matter most to the people I represent. I intend to continue doing just that whenever I can improve education for our children or enhance our criminal justice system to protect our families from violent offenders.

“For the past two weeks someone has bombarded my constituents with anonymous automated phone calls lying about my record. It is unfortunate they are being inconvenienced and I encourage them to file formal complaints if they feel they are being harassed.

“Regardless of any difference in opinion, it is important to always have an open, honest and civil exchange of ideas. I stand by my record on these important public policy issues and am confident the public can see the truth through these despicable campaign tactics.”

The patriot act was bipartisan legislation, in fact Mr. Obama just renewed it into law.

sflesch-You're right, everyone has "Special Interest Groups", you have yours representing your left leaning interests, and all my "Special Interest Groups" lean right. They are not running out of control, they are representing our individual interests. It's the government representatives that are running out of control, by ignoring the interests of their constituents. They are the ones who have to refuse to take bribes by the special interest groups. Offering a bribe may be wrong but it's not necessarily illegal and doesn't change policy, accepting one is and does.

"far left, radical liberal progressivism" as opposed to the water-boarding, Patriot Act, Haliburton right? I admit I lean left, but both sides need reform. Special Interests groups are running out of control. Everyone has one now, except for the common person, so it's just a matter of which group politicians want to collect from and don't want to piss off.

change will come in Nov. Career pols will be given the boot.

mhennessy--I take each issue and decide what I feel is the best solution to it, whether it be a liberal or conservative leaning. The problem as I see it is too many people are not independent thinkers, they are sheep and just follow along because it is the easy thing to do. All topics are NOT cut and dry as too manny on either side want you to believe it is. The best thing we can do is vote out the career politicians and start over...I don;t think either party has the only answer to our problems.

mhennessy - I am for the change. Sometimes liberal is good sometimes conservative. At this crossroads a good dose of liberalism is needed to get the ball rolling.

concerned- as we learned this election cycle...change can be bad or good. The question is, as an independent, do you lean conservative or liberal. I don't understand how you could be both (or neither). The problem I see with standing in the middle of the road is that you have a tendancy to get hit from both sides. Respectfully...mh

mhennessy - all will unfold in time. I am not for or against either party. I am for change and it will happen.

mhennessy - 3/15/2010 6:07 PM
concerned, I would usually tend to agree with you, but this is the first time the whole country has gotten a taste of true, far left, radical liberal progressivism in action. And I don't think it will play much outside the major metro markets...(re; the two coasts plus Chicago). The true, moderate-to-right rest of the country won't be fooled again.

From an Independent point of view yes it will be an election to remember. So will any other future elections as change happens. Don't bet on either party becoming a staple.
