This Halloween I'll be at a family wedding.  I'm disappointed to be missing Halloween-- only because it falls on a rare Saturday.  The next time that happens both my kids will be out of the house. The last time Halloween fell on a Saturday was one of our best.  The kids were in prime trick or treating age.  No rushing home from work.  No exhausted kids the next day. A family only gets one, maybe two Saturday Halloweens they can enjoy like that.
A growing number of municipalities have moved their Halloween celebrations-- scheduling trick or treating the weekend before Halloween.
This year, a retailer is backing the change.  Now granted, greed is undoubtedy motivating him. But still, Steven Silverstein brings up a good point in his pitch saying Thanksgiving was moved to be the fourth Thursday of November by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, at the request of retailers. Some people balked but they adjusted.  Now, it's the only thing we know.  A tradition.
So why not start a new tradition? Let's celebrate Halloween on the last Saturday in October.
Life is too short not to make the most of a costume and free candy.

Feel Strongly?  Steven Silverstein is circulating a petition to make HalloWeekend official.
