In my purse are papers no clothes-loving shopper should be without: coupons. 20%, $25 off a $100, $3.50 off of $10 etc… I don’t leave home without them and if I do, I don’t buy. I have to go back. It’s a pain. The money I save is probably wiped away by the time I’ve lost and the gas. Call it psychological savings.
Coupons and sales make it easier to spend because look at what I save? (Ha!) And this is why I’m so intrigued by JCPenney’s new approach. No more sales, no more discounts, more coupons (?!) All its merchandise will be marked down at least 40 percent permanently.
Penney’s new CEO is from hugely successful Apple. This new price strategy is his first big move. In addition to his making “sale” prices everyday prices, this CEO is also starting simpler pricing. Gone are price tags that read $9.99. It will either be $9 or $10. It’s a little thing, I know, just 99 cents. But if my husband asks I always round down the price. What will I do now?
It'll be interesting to see how this JCPenney’s experiment turns out. I’m curious: would you prefer things be cheaper on the whole, or do you want your coupons, your discounts, and sales. Part of me would like to clean out purse.
