"Wheee"!
That was the subject of an e-mail I received this week from Penfield Town Supervisor Tony LaFountain.
No, he wasn’t celebrating his re-election, but rather the new traffic signals which are finally "up and running" at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Jackson Road. I have written several blogs about the number of serious accidents at this location and, along with many others, have lobbied for several years for traffic signals there. It began, in fact, with former Supervisor George Wiedemer. Before it could happen, the road had to be lowered, studies completed, and final approval obtained from the State Department of Transportation. (Thanks to Senator Jim Alesi for his help!!)
The poles and lights went up a few weeks ago. The wiring was completed about ten days ago—and the lights have been "flashing" for about a week- to get motorists accustomed to the change.
Then—on Wednesday- (11/9) someone threw the switch—and the "Stop and Go" began.
I’m sure some of those who like to speed down Atlantic Avenue may find this an inconvenience, but I know this is now a safer intersection. It has been a lesson in patience and perseverance, but I am please to know that the officials listened- and took action.
I realize this doesn’t mean an end to all accidents. On occasion, there WILL be someone who doesn’t stop. If that happens too often, we’ll just have to lobby all over again—this time for one of those "Red Light" Cameras—like they have in the city!
For now, though- a simple "Thank You"—to those in government who made it happen!
