News is fast.

It’s a continuous NASCAR race. Not all drivers are able to continue the journey to the proverbial finish. The pit stop often seems like an oasis of calm. The turns are never the same.

This race is very much a road course – one that the staff at 13WHAM has perfected. And they’re still racing.

I grew up in Rochester and attend college in Geneseo. I’ve always turned to channel 13 for my local news – so walking in on Day 1 and seeing Don Alhart across from me was intimidating, until he introduced himself.

“Hi there, I’m Don,”

“D…D…Don, I’m Joe.”

Ice = broken. Time to contribute.

Shadowing reporters was similar – I’ve watched all of them, and now, I’m in a car with most of them at some point during the week. They are poets of the English language, and are some of the most approachable people I’ve come to know.

It has been very much a humbling experience. And an experience in which I have learned more during the past 2 months than in the first 3 years of college combined.

The professionalism never ceases to amaze me. Everyone is an expert in something, and familiar with nearly everything.

The photographers are top notch. The producers are perfectionists.

And the result is the best news broadcast in Rochester.

And for good reason.

Joe Leverone, 13WHAM Intern from SUNY Geneseo
