Wallkill, N.Y. (AP) — A New York state trooper has been suspended without pay after he was charged with assault and trying to stop his girlfriend from breathing during a domestic incident.

State police at Middletown say 36-year-old Todd Warholic was arrested about 4 a.m. Saturday in the town of Wallkill.

Besides assault and a charge of criminally obstructing his live-in girlfriend's breathing, he was charged with unlawful imprisonment.

State police Major Ed Raso wouldn't discuss details of the criminal case because there's also an ongoing administrative review. He wouldn't say Monday if the victim received medical treatment.

Warholic, a seven-year veteran, was arraigned and posted $1,500 bail. His lawyer didn't initially return a call seeking comment.

A temporary order of protection was issued when he was arraigned.
