Rochester, N.Y. (AP) — The University of Rochester is establishing an Institute of Popular Music that will immerse students in tunes from the blues to the British Invasion.
Faculty members and officials at the U of R say the new institute is believed to be the first year-round institute of its kind at a U.S. college, according to the Democrat and Chronicle. It will start next semester.
The university has long had the Eastman School of Music, a world-class institution for classical music and jazz.
The pop music institute's 15 courses include many that are already taught at the university.
Professors say the courses will take students through a scholarly examination of popular music, including hip hop, rock and country.
