My Sister Had One; So I Decided I Needed One Too

They tell you to get a colonoscopy when you are 50-ish. They say it is a great way to detect colon cancer because there are few signs of a problem any other way. This is so true.

My sister went for a colonoscopy in her early 50’s and they found a cancerous polyp. They performed surgery to remove the cancer and she is doing great ever since. I went in for my physical and my doctor said I should go before I’m 50 because of what my sister went though. Obviously I thought… Oh No!

I heard bad things about this procedure. That couldn’t have been any farther from reality! I went to the same doctor as my sister,
Dr. Stephen Rauh, and he made it the procedure quick and painless.

I guess I am leaving out one important detail. The day of “cleansing”, the day before the procedure is comparable to pledging a fraternity or 2-a-day practices in football. You start the ”cleansing” by drinking some product you mix with Gatorade and wait for your body to empty out. It really does empty out.

The only thing left after 4-5 hour were my dentures. I don’t actually wear them, but you get the picture. Dr. Rauh now had a perfect opportunity to view me like an apartment that had never been lived in!

I went to his office early in the morning. I had to supply a driver to take me home after. My daughter was nice enough to be my chauffeur. She called me “Miss Daisy”. Just like the movie. I went into the procedure room was given an IV. Dr Rauh said hi and the next thing I knew the nurse told be I could get dressed and go home.

I was amazed that I did not feel a thing and I could not remember a thing. My daughter gave me a ride home, just like the movie, except I sat in the front seat. When I got home I made lunch and never had a regret about having the procedure. I am actually very glad I did.

I would tell anyone who is near their 50th birthday to schedule an appointment. You might be like me… Have the procedure and find nothing or be like my sister and find something, but find it early enough to treat it. Either way… You will be glad you did!

I am Steve's other sister (twin to the one that had colon cancer). I had encouraged her to have her colonoscopy back at the time she had her original procedure, and Thank God she did have it. I also just went for my 5 year procedure, due to her cancer occurance, and I am again, glad I did as I had 2 pre-cancerous polyps removed. I was going to wait for the full 10 years, but thought it was best that I get "rechecked". I strongly encourage everyone to get their intitial screening before 50, if there is colon cancer in the family. Be proactive! The prep is not too much fun, but there was a big load off my mind knowing I was able to "nip it in the bud"! Dorene
