Rochester, N.Y.- The Rochester Police Department is teaming up with inmates from an area correctional facility to get guns off city streets.
Police will collaborate with inmates of Orleans Correctional Facility, Full Gospel Tabernacle Church and the newly formed Rochester Police Foundation in a program to combat violence.
Inmates who are part of the correctional facility’s “Civic Duty Initiative Team” raised money for a gun buyback program to benefit the City of Rochester.
Officials say the inmates wanted to make a difference and come together for the common purpose of saving lives and convey the message that “Violence is not the answer.”
They raised more than a thousand dollars in 18 months for this effort.
The dollar amount was matched by the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church which was then matched by the Rochester Police Foundation.
The Gun buyback date is set for Saturday, September 22nd from 1pm to 5pm, at the Full Gospel Tabernacle Gospel Church at 614 Clifford Avenue.
Anyone who brings in a long gun will receive a $50 gift card from Wegmans. Anyone who brings in a hand gun will get a $100 gift card.
