February is American Heart Month

  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America
  • Stroke is the second leading cause of death
  • Good News: heart disease is preventable and manageable with nutrition and lifestyle changes

3 simple nutrition tips; 2 easy lifestyle tips

Reduce Intake of SATURATED Fat:

  • Saturated fat - meat, cheese, butter - clogs arteries
  • Saturated fat raises bad (LDL) cholesterol levels
  • Saturated fat more likely to accumulate as "belly fat"; this contributes to heart disease
  • Replace butter with soft spreads (70% less saturated fat, zero cholesterol)
  • Don't give up red meat; Look for less fatty streaks (marbling) and trim all meat
  • Choose Low- and Fat-Free Dairy Products
Dairy products rich in calcium:
  • Calcium protects heart and works to control blood pressure
  • Many studies also show weight loss effect (important in heart disease)
  • Good source of protein

The Power of Potassium:

  • The missing message about blood pressure control is potassium
  • Three major journal studies conclude that increasing potassium and decreasing sodium is the single most significant dietary choice to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke
  • 4,700 milligrams per day is the recommended amount of potassium
  • Eat these foods: tomatoes, oranges, orange juice, bananas etc. to reach the goal

Dance! Dance! Dance! (and walk)

  • Getting some physical activity is essential for heart health
  • Make it fun!
  • Go dancing, jump rope
  • Get a pedometer; walk for fun; walk for a cause
