Rochester, N.Y. —If you head out to the strawberry patches this week, don’t be surprised if there’s not much red amid the patches of green.
Strawberries may be hard to come by at local farm markets. Many local markets have told 13 WHAM that strawberry season is already over. Last week’s heat demolished a crop that was already small by normal standards.
Farmers began worrying about this year’s crop back in March when a cold snap was predicted after unseasonable warm weather. The warm weather caused the crops to bud or bloom early, and the icy chill on its heels did not bode well for crops.
Farmers are now looking ahead to the blueberry and raspberry seasons, which are faring much better. These crops will be available to pick at local markets soon.
