(CNN) - The number of Americans planning to celebrate Halloween is growing.

About seven out of 10 people in the U.S. will put on a costume or attend a spooky party in 2012. That's up about three percent from last year.

Retailers also expect Americans to spend more on Halloween. The average person will shell out a total of $79 for costumes, candy and decorations this year.
