Washington, D.C. - The Federal Trade Commission is cracking down on text message scams.

On Thursday, the agency announced charges against 29 people.

The FTC said the suspects are responsible for sending out 180 million messages promising free gift cards or prizes.

Not only did some cell phone customers have to pay for the messages, but many were tricked into giving away personal information.
