(Greece, N.Y.) - Two probes of the Greece Police Department are now in progress--one is internal -- involving a new public safety officer.

The other case is the criminal case involving alleged public corruption.

We've learned it begins at the top.  Police Chief Merritt Rahn, Deputy Chief Mackin and Sgt. Brian Ball have all been suspended for shredding documents two days before the new public safety officer was to start the internal investigation.

Investigators say Chief Rahn and two top men made contact via text message the night before they met at police headquarters on Island Drive for the alleged shredding.

Sources say the messages centered on locating specific documents--the very documents they are now accused of shredding.

Four bags of shredded scraps are now being pasted together at the state police forensic lab.  it's a difficult task made a little easier because investigators know some of the documents they're looking for.

That's because one of the three accused men texted a fourth officer, a Lieutenant, asking  whether certain files had been left on his desk.

This fourth officer was not involved in the alleged wrong-doing. In fact, when  he found out about the shredding, he turned the text messages over to state police.

The probe will also take a closer look at a nine-year old case involving the service revolver assigned to the chief.

*The gun turned up at a raid of a crack house in 2000.
*The chief later said it had been stolen, but he did not report the theft.
*If improper steps were taken to replace the weapon.

What Rahn knew about the hit and run case of Nick Joseph is also an issue.

During Joseph’s trial, it was learned Greece Police never impounded or photographed the cars and a K-9 search was never done.

The actions of Sgt. Thomas Schammerhorn, who was in charge of the investigation, are under scrutiny.  Was it shoddy police work or a cover-up?

A series of complaints filed by mostly female residents after traffic stops is also under scrutiny.

The sixth person under investigation is Gary Pignato.  He is charged with coercing two women into sex; he’d had contact with both of them while on duty.

Two other potential victims have stepped forward.

Video tapes of Police Chief Merritt Rahn taken by 13WHAM News subpoenaed last month have not yet been shown to the grand jury.

One question is whether any of the accused has misused their authority and if so, whether it was at a criminal level.

Schamerhorn is the worst of them all. He is a predater and needs to go. Twenty years is enough.

It is a shame that young children used to look up to police officers, firemen, etc. Look what has happened, it has all gone to hell because some of these individuals think that they are GOD and they are untouchable. I had an incident happen involving my daughter who was in a Explorer Post of a Fire Dept. in which I will not name- a fireman was helping the Advisor with groups and this person decided to take pictures with his camera phone of the girls chests and all this person got for punishment was a 30 day suspension, and a talking to about not using his phone while he was helping. How is that for punishment!!! There has been a lot of inapropriate behavior going on in firehalls, and police stations. These ones in Greece should be locked up and never allowed to serve in any police department again!!! We need to restore our trust in Police and Fire Personnel not just for us but for our future generations. The actions of these ones mentioned should not reflect the numerous good-ones who still serve our communities.

All three of them belong in jail, with Rahn doing the longest time.

I think the investigation should not stop at the police dept. The Greece Judge's knew about all the simalar complaints from woman about Sargent Schammerhorn. They did not care anything about how they were victimized. Only about how much money they could rake in from the fines......

fusion - Get Real!- You can throw stones all you want at the GPD- but don’t go blasting the residents by saying you would be ashamed to live in Greece. How would you like it if I said I was glad I didn’t live in that sleazy Spencerport- You had a Rapist for an Ambulance Captain and all sorts of suspicious stories surround the “sudden fire” and quick tear down of the fire hall...hmmmmm- talk about corrupt and sleazy. It’s just as obvious your town isn’t perfect.

Why TWO investigations? Because one of them is being conducted by the town in the hopes of distracting public attention away from whatever blame belongs to Supervisor John Auberger and his political machine. The people should demand the town shut down its diversionary maneuver, er, investigation, and let the DA do his work. Auberger, butt out and let the truth emerge.

Keep the ball rolling forward! They need to also look at the rest of the police officers, bosses and road patrol. I think I will start posting the names tonight to look at and everyone should do the same on this blog

I am not getting too excited yet. When dealing with organized crime there are so many things that can happen. Especially when it goes as deep as it does in greece. I will wait for the indictments before I begin to feel good. And as long as auberger is in charge, greece politics will always be dirty. I bet he burned his documents.
