Rochester, N.Y. - The cost of installing streets, lighting, sewers, sidewalks, and other infrastructure will likely be $25 million to $30 million, according to City Corporation Counsel Tom Richards. The city will budget for the cost and seek outside funds, he said.
Demolition of the former shopping and office complex is expected to start in June, with the buildings surrounding Midtown Tower on Broad and Clinton coming down first. That includes the bus station and the old Wegmans building, although some parts of the Wegmans building could be saved. The first phase of demolition is expected to be finished in early 2011. The entire demolition is expected to cost $50 million.
The Skyways connecting Midtown to Chase Tower, Xerox Tower and Sibley will come down before fall.
Asbestos removal is about two-thirds finished.
PAETEC plans to build its headquarters on the site. A developer is renovating Midtown Tower into high-end condos. A performing arts center could also be built on the block.
The city is taking its time seeking developers for the remaining parcels, Richards said, as the city wants to get the site shovel ready.
