Greece, N.Y. - Greece Police took a man into custody early Monday morning after a five hour stand-off.
It started as a domestic dispute around 7 p.m. Police say the man was armed and refused to come out of the home. He was eventually taken into custody, no one was hurt.
The stand off prompted the emergency notification system to take affect which alerts neighbors of an incident in their neighborhood.
Last night, many viewers called us and tweeted about the notification call to try to get more information.
Some viewers were concerned they did not receive an emergency call and others thought the call was too vague.
“At first I didn't think it was real,” said Kathy Petix, who never knew she would get an emergency notification call is something was happening in her neighborhood. “I felt more secure that they did that.”
The first call went out just after 7 p.m. telling people to stay in their homes and away from windows and doors.
“Then they called back to say it was still going on at about 10:30 p.m. and to still stay away from the doors and windows,” said Elaine Gennarino, who also received a call. “By 12:20 they called and said the issue was resolved.”
But not everyone got a phone call.
“A couple of the neighbors don't have a land line and they got texts,” said Gennarino.
People without landlines have to sign up for the hyper reach service online with Monroe County 9-1-1.
“I didn't know that until I actually saw it online,” said Heather Morgigno, who received a call on her landline now plans to sign up her cell phone.
“If none of us were home, if my daughter was out or something like that you know it would be good for her to get a call,” said Morgigno, “and not to come into the neighborhood, seems like it would be dangerous to be driving in at that point.”
A total of 387 people were contacted.
While neighbors in general were pleased the got the emergency notification call some did tell me they wish it had shared more information.
Officials say it's not a perfect system but it's a way for them to get vital information to people generally quickly and their record message can only be so long.
