The Rochester Americans say they are not for sale. But team president Lewis Staats does admit that they have been approached by several NHL teams that are interested in buing an AHL franchise. Staats would not comment on the specific NHL teams, but the Buffalo Sabres are looking into the possibility of buying an AHL franchise.
While appearing on a Buffalo radio station on Thursday, Sabres president Ted Black was asked about the teams plans for an AHL affiliate. Black said, "
" We're in the phase of ownership where we're going to consider everything and look at everything because we're new and fresh. I came from the Penguins where we owned our AHL affiliate. Have I looked at that concept, absolutely I've looked at it. I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't consider it....those are part of the possible what is probable I don't know yet."Black went on to say "We have a deal in place with Portland that extends for two or three more years, but I also know that affiliations do change. What I do know is that it is very important for the Sabres and hockey in this area for hockey to thrive in Portland and in Rochester and everywhere in between."
