Jeurys Familia fanned nine in seven innings, helping the Buffalo Bisons to a 10-3 win over the Red Wings Thursday night. The teams meet again Friday at 7:05 p.m., with Fan Appreciation Nite prizes, and fireworks after the game.
Starting on the mound for the Wings was P.J. Walters, who opened up with two hit-less innings, giving up only one walk in the first.
Familia was the starting pitcher for Buffalo, and with one out in the second the Wings got the first hit of the game from Rene Rivera. Rochester was unable to get another hit and the second inning finished 0-0.
In the third, Walters seemed to be in control of the game until a line drive from Mike Nickeas glanced off the glove of leaping shortstop Brian Dozier, landing in left for a single. The next batter for the Bisons, Fred Lewis, nailed a home run into left field and gave Buffalo the lead 2-0.
The Wings seemed ready to respond to the Bisons' runs scored earlier in the inning when Ray Chang hit a double with one out. Tsuyoshi Nishioka was then able to bring Chang in to score a run and cut the lead to 2-1.
Buffalo managed to cause trouble for Walters again in the fourth. After walking Adam Loewen with one out, Loewen was then able to successfully steal second. Matt Tuiasosopo, the next batter up, hit a double which allowed the runner to score and increased the Bisons' lead. Walters managed to prevent any further runs from being scored, leaving the score at 3-1.
The Wings responded to Buffalo's run scored in the bottom of the inning. After Clete Thomas reached first on a base hit and then stole second, Eduardo Escobar drilled a deep fly ball that went over the center fielder's head, scoring Thomas and sending Escobar to third. The Wings would not be able to bring Escobar home and the inning ended with Buffalo up 3-2.
In the fifth, Buffalo continued to add to their lead, but a pair of strikeouts with a runner on was good enough end the Bisons' threat at 4-2.
The Wings responded, once again, after Chang reached on a base hit, than advanced to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on an infield grounder. Nishioka, with the man on the third, got a base hit that scored Chang and brought Buffalo's lead back to one run at 4-3.
In the sixth, the Wings replaced Walters on the mound with Deolis Guerra, who gave up one run in the inning, leaving the score 5-3. The Wings threatened to score in bottom of the inning when Brian Dinkelman doubled, but could not come up with any runs.
Guerra took control of the game in the seventh, going three up three down. The Wings could not capitalize on the opportunity to squeeze Buffalo's lead down, and the game went into the eighth inning 5-3.
Bobby Lanigan came on for the Wings to start the eighth inning. Lanigan allowed a three-run homer to Josh Satin, part of a five-run ninth for Buffalo.
