Rochester, N.Y. – Rochester will be the site of the 2011 Empire State Games, the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation announced Thursday.
The Empire State Games will feature more than 6,000 New York State athletes participating in Olympic-style sports.
The Office of Parks and Recreation says it expects Rochester’s economy to gain $10-12 million dollars due to the games.
“This is fantastic news for the city and the entire region,” said Mayor Duffy, “Not only will the Games give our economy a significant boost, they will present a major opportunity to showcase Rochester’s outstanding attractions and amenities.”
Rochester recently hosted the Summer Games in 2006, and previously in 1993 and 1998.
In 2011, the University of Rochester, R.I.T., Nazareth College, Roberts Wesleyan, MCC and SUNY Brockport are expected to host competitions as well as athletes.
Athletes will compete over a four-day period in 28 different events in three divisions. The Games will be held July 27-31, 2011 and is expected to draw 15,000 to 20,000 spectators.
Buffalo will host the 2010 Summer Games.
