ROCHESTER, N.Y. - If you've already marked the 2012 Wegmans LPGA Championship down for the third week of June, hopefully you've done it in pencil. The 2012 Wegmans LPGA Championship will be played from June 7-10 at Locust Hill Country Club.
It is no secret that LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan wants to move the Wegmans event to an earlier week in June in an effort to put more space between major tournaments. With the 2012 U.S. Women's Open scheduled for July 2-6 in Wisconsin, the LPGA's Championship is the tournament that will be moving.
At first glance, one might think that the second week of June would make the most sense for the Wegmans event as it would make travel from Rochester to Waterloo, Ontario where the new event is being held relatively simple. However, the second week of June is the same week as the U.S. Men's Open, and the LPGA would almost certainly hesitate to hold one of its majors in the same week as a men's major championship. Therefore, it makes the most sense that when the dates for the 2012 Wegmans event are announced, it will most likely be during the first full week of June.
It should also be noted that Wegmans is contracted to host the LPGA Championship for one more year. Should the LPGA choose to look for a different title sponsor of the LPGA Championship, Rochester's tournament would most likely go back to being a regular tour stop as it has been for 33 of the past 35 years.
