I love hearing Buddy talk and it’s not just because of that old school, southern drawl.  It is because he gets right to the point and he is honest when he talks about his team. On Friday he was asked if his roster is better in 2011 than it was in 2010. Buddy said,  “My gosh I hope so” .  Bills fans have been hoping for that for a decade.

No one really knows if Marcel Dareus is going to be that stud on the defensive line that this team has been dying for, but the guy looks and sounds the part. He is huge but seemingly humble guy who has that mean streak when he plays that all great lineman have. I had a coach once tell me you want your defensive lineman to play like they are close to getting arrested.  That is the way you want them to be on the field, not off. With Marcel Dareus it appears Buddy got that guy.

It’s the other side of the line of scrimmage that I am more concerned about. I think Tyson Clabo would have been a great addition, but it looks like he might have just used the Bills to up his price in Atlanta.  The move to make Eric Wood the center was a natural. Anyone who can’t see that guy leading this line over the next decade hasn’t been paying attention. But until we know the tackles can protect Fitz and give him time to throw the ball this team will struggle to win games.

I like a lot of what they can do at the skill positions this season, but Chan Gailey’s top priority on offense in 2011 has to be the make CJ Spiller an impact player on offense. In this day and age of NFL offenses when teams spread the field and play a violent version of a video game, guys like Spiller are supposed to be dynamic. Last year he was a non factor for this team and that cannot happen again.

.

Some other thoughts¨

  • ·         Don’t criticize the Brad Smith signing.  It’s not a huge amount of money for a guy who will contribute 8-10 plays a game for the offense and special teams.

  • ·         I honestly don’t think they’ll miss Paul Posluszny in any place other than the team picture. He was a very solid but very replaceable linebacker. Watch out that Channing Crowder doesn’t find his way north to be reunited with George Edwards and become Buffalo’s starter on the inside. That would be a significant upgrade

  • ·         Drayton Florence staying was huge. He is a rare thing on that defense (playmaker). They need more guys like him this year because that defense spent way too much time on the field
