The IronPigs were unable to complete the sweep on Sunday, thanks mostly to the efforts of RHP Kyle Gibson, who was perfect through six straight innings prior to allowing a triple to Scott Podsednik with no outs in the top of the seventh. Gibson would continue, and ended the day after 7.2 innings pitched with two runs allowed on just three hits with ten strikeouts.
Pete Orr drove in the first run of the day off of Gibson on the RBI single to score Podsednik following his triple. Brandon Moss would double two batters later to move Orr over to third, who then scored on the bases-loaded Josh Barfield sacrifice fly that very nearly landed in the bullpen for a grand-slam, but fell short by just a few feet. That would be all the offense for the IronPigs on the steamy afternoon, as RHP Anthony Slama came in for 1.1 hitless innings to clean things up for the Red Wings.
For Nate Bump, Sunday was a different story as he picked up his fifth loss of the season to move to a 2-5 record. The Red Wings got the scoring started in the top of the third inning as Jeff Bailey grounded into a force out with bases loaded to score Toby Gardenhire, and then it was Brian Dinkelman who went deep over the right field wall for a three-run homerun to put the Red Wings up 4-0.
The Red Wings would strike once again in the top of the fifth with a two-run homerun off of Bump, putting the Red Wings up by a mark of 6-0 while the IronPigs were still in the firm grip of Gibson.
Bump would be done after 5.0 innings, ending the day with six runs allowed on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Juan Perez and Scott Mathieson would take over from there, each pitching 2.0 scoreless innings apiece in an effort to give the IronPigs a chance to climb back, but to no avail. Perez held the Red Wings hitless through the sixth and seventh innings, while Mathies surrendered just one hit through the final two frames of the game.
The IronPigs will now hit the road for eight games, beginning with a four-game series in Gwinnett starting on Monday at 7:05. From there, the IronPigs will travel a bit further north to face the Charlotte Knights in a four-game set prior to returning to Coca-Cola Park to face the Durham Bulls on June 7th.
