The Toledo Mud Hens topped the Red Wings 7-3 Monday at Frontier Field. Ben Revere and Rene Tosoni homered for Rochester; the series continues with a 7:05 p.m. game Tuesday night.
The Mud Hens' Cale Iorg led off with a double off of Rochester starter Scott Diamond, but Diamond got three quick outs - including a pair of strikeouts of the numbers three and four hitters - to escape the scoring threat. In the Wings' half of the first, Revere drilled a 3-2 pitch from Adam Wilk off the right field signage deck to put Rochester ahead 1-0. It was Revere's first Triple-A home run.
After Scott Thorman led off the Toledo second with a single, Bryan Pounds batted in a run to tie the score 1-1 with a double. Pounds later scored on a fielder's choice and the Mud Hens left the inning ahead 2-1.
Diamond notched five strikeouts through the first four innings, his highest strikeout total in a game except for an eight strikeout game April 21 in Buffalo. But Wilk held the Rochester offense in check, allowing just two hits over innings two through five.
The Mud Hens widened their lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning, with Thorman and Pounds batting in two more runs. Carlos Gutierrez came on in relief for Diamond in the inning; Diamond ended the evening with seven strikeouts. Gutierrez recorded the final two outs quickly to set aside the Mud Hens.
Max St. Pierre led off the seventh inning for the Mud Hens with a single, and subsequent hits combined with a wild pitch and walk to Argenis Diaz from Gutierrez put Toledo ahead 7-1. Ryan Strieby earned all three RBIs off of a double. Gutierrez was then relieved by Cole DeVries. DeVries quickly retired the next two batters to end the inning with a strikeout and a pop out.
Dusty Hughes struck out two batters in a perfect ninth inning of relief for Rochester. Tosoni homered off the Budweiser sign on the right field scoreboard in the ninth inning, and Dustin Martin added an RBI single.
