Brian Gionta wanted the Sabres to make him an offer this past off-season when he was a free agent looking for a home. Knowing the many ties Gionta and his family have to the area, that's not much of a surprise. But the offer never came, and Gionta garnered a five-year, $25 million contract from the Montreal Canadiens. Then he got the last laugh against the Sabres in Buffalo's season opener.
Gionta found himself in perfect position to tap in an errant shot 2:42 into overtime, and beat Ryan Miller to give Montreal a 2-1 win at HSBC Arena. It was Gionta's second goal of the season, helping Montreal start the season with a 2-0 record for just the second time in the past decade.
Tim Connolly opened the scoring 2:20 into the game on a power play goal for a 1-0 Rochester lead that would be short-lived. Travis Moen knotted the game at one 13 minutes into the second period on a controversial goal that occurred when Moen tapped a shot towards Ryan Miller and was then checked into Miller just after the puck crossed the line.
