(WHAM-TV) - President Obama won re-election by dominating the electoral college and winning the popular vote by more than two million votes.

The president won the popular vote with more than 58 million votes to 56 million.

Numbers showed he took 303 electoral votes in 26 states and the District of Columbia, according to ABC News.

Romney won 206 electoral votes in 24 states.

The only state to change from 2008 was North Carolina, which Mitt Romney narrowly won.

The president's supporters sang and danced while they waited for his victory speech which began after 1:30 a.m.

That speech included a vow to work with Republicans, and a nod to optimists who see great things ahead.

“We're not as cynical as the pundits believe,” said the president. “We are greater than the sum of individual ambitions. And we remain more than a collection of red states and blue states…we are the United States.”
