(WHAM-TV) - Election night was a very big night for women.

It started with the Senate where a record 18 senators are women after female candidates picked up several seats.

That number could rise, with several races still undecided.

The new female senators include the first openly gay Senator, Democrat Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin.

Democrat Mazie Hirono of Hawaii became the first Asian-American woman and the first Buddhist in the Senate.

Then in New Hampshire, women hold almost all of the top positions in power. That includes an entirely female congressional delegation, a female senator--and a female governor with the newly-elected Democrat Maggie
Hassan.
