Tornadoes are rare in New York State compared to other parts of the U.S., but when severe weather broke out across the state on April 27, 2011, a severe thunderstorm produced a tornado in the Southern Tier of New York State. The National Weather Service in Binghamton confirmed a tornado near Campbell in Steuben County. The EF1 tornado, as rated on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, had winds of 100 mph, a path length of about 4.5 miles and a width of approximately 150 yards. Dozens of trees were snapped off or uprooted. Two homes suffered roof and siding damage and a barn, bolted to the cement foundation, was moved off its pad with roof and wall damage. It should be noted that New York State on average will see between 4-6 tornadoes each year.
