Nationwide this year has been a devastating season for tornados. Across the country there were more than 219 tornadoes for the month of March alone. This compares to only 75 tornados for this time last year and only 33 in 2010. This past week there were 10 to 12 tornadoes that touched down in the crowded Dallas- Fort Worth area. So does this early start to the severe weather season mean we can expect a record breaking season for twisters? Experts and meteorologists that specialize in this field believe this upswing in tornado activity is unusual, but not unprecedented. Much of this severe weather can be directly connected to the early arrival of unseasonably warm weather which occurred several weeks ago. But if we return to a more typical spring weather pattern the frequency of tornados should diminish to more reasonable numbers. Of course it is less important how many tornados are actually out there compared to the specific location for the twisters.
