Here is a look at the monthly climate summary for January 2010.
The month started out quite cold. The first 12 days featured below normal temperatures and above normal snow. In fact, it dropped to -4 on January 10. This was the coldest temperature recorded in Rochester in nearly five years.
This cold and snowy period was followed by unusual warmth from the 13th of January through the 27th. Every day during this stretch was warmer than normal and can be considered the January thaw.
From the 28th through the 31st a return to brutally cold weather and daily snow occurred. The official low dropped below zero once again for several nights in a row on the 29th and 30th.
Overall, the monthly snow accumulation was 32.8”, nearly 8” above normal. The average monthly temperature was near normal (+0.3 degrees) at 24.2 degrees.
You may be wondering what the snow accumulation was in your neighborhood through January. Here are some select totals from official National Weather Service (NWS) snow spotters across the region. The folks in Webster had 41.1”. One resident in the city of Rochester measured 35.9”. In Brockport the snow piled up to around 31.7”. Out to our west in Orleans County, we found 51.9” in Kent. East of Rochester in Wayne County, the town of North Rose found 45.4” of snow.
In case you curious, the town of Fulton in Oswego County had the highest snow total in NY State this January. Fulton had 75” of snow in January.
