Hundreds of people in the U.S. are struck by lightning every year and now that we are officially into the summer season, thunderstorms will become more of an issue for Rochester. To avoid being struck by lightning there are a few tips to keep in mind. First, monitor the 13 WHAM weather forecasts and if lightning threatens have a plan for getting to safety. Try to get inside an enclosed building or vehicle at the first rumble of thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after the last thunder clap and keep away from plumbing, electrical equipment and wiring during the thunderstorm. Do not use corded phones, but an unplugged cell phone is safe to use. Remember, “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”
