Tornadoes are rare in New York State, but this past week featured several severe thunderstorms that produced tornadoes. The first tornado report came in last Sunday from Paynesville in Alleghany County. The EF1 tornado, as rated on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, had winds around 100-110 mph and a path length of about 5 miles. The tornadoes width was around 100 yards. The second tornado report came from the town of East Palermo in Oswego County around 8:25 PM last Monday. This tornado had an EF0 rating with winds of 70-80 mph and traveled 1.6 miles on the ground. The maximum width of this tornado was 150 yards. Typically New York State will see between 4-6 tornadoes each year. You may remember that last year a tornado dropped down in Corfu and Hilton.
