For meteorologists how we describe the forecast, the words and pictures we use are extremely important in describing the future as we see it. But have you ever wondered what is behind some of this terminology? What is the difference between rain, drizzle, or showers? It is difficult enough to try to forecast the unique weather of Western New York without misrepresenting the conditions just because you choose the wrong word or phase in trying to describe the upcoming day. No doubt using a weather icon or graphic can assist in conveying the message. But in Rochester how often can you use just one icon to create a picture of the weather for the entire day? The 13 WHAM Weather Authority has a 7 day forecast which uses text, icons and numbers all working in concert to help ‘paint a picture’ for the viewer. But I think you will agree it is the spoken word that conveys the greatest meaning.
