Remember that winds typically vary more in spring and fall when the air pressure and air temperature can change significantly from one day to another. Cold air is heavier and denser than warmer air and when one replaces the other, the pressure gradient increases. This quick change in atmospheric pressure creates strong, gusty winds. So far April has had five days with wind gusts of 40 mph or greater at the airport. The highest gust in April occurred on the 11th at 66 mph. It should be noted that these are gusts and not sustained wind speeds. The average monthly wind speed in Rochester is between 9 and 10 mph.
