Dancing with the Stars crowns its Season 16 winner! But before that happens, one couple falls achingly short in fourth place and the top three duke it out one last time with the Instant Dance. Who took home the Mirrorball trophy? And who was left out of the fun?
Guys, we're almost there! Two more hours. We can do this! So what do we make of online voting being down the whole night and this morning? TPTB at work here? Common sense would dictate that this hurts Zendaya and her tech-savvy young fans the most. But the show's done nothing to suggest that they want to toss her under the boss (that'd be Jacoby). Perhaps a sign of things to come, Zendaya and Val do lose their first Twitter-vote gimmick of the season for the freestyle encore — Kellie and Derek get the honor instead. After that, it's time for the first results.
Fourth place goes to Aly and Mark.
"This has been the experience of my life," she says. "It's been so amazing. Good luck to you three. I love you guys so much."
Surprising? Based solely on scores maybe (Aly was five points ahead of Jacoby), but Jacoby always had the fan base and personality to compensate for whatever shortcomings he had (and he had a few last night). Aly was a hard worker and has improved a lot for not having musicality and being unable to count music, but it was clear from the beginning that she'd likely miss the podium, not unlike the all-around final at the Olympics. (I kid because I love. She can console herself with her two gold medals.) I do like that their inflation of Aly's scores and lowballing of Jacoby's came back to bite them in the butt though. Or maybe it was just the stripper pole-climb last night that did Aly in.
The final three go off to practice their Instant Dances, while we kill time with Pitbull and Psy, who's a season too late to be relevant.
Parade of Fallen Stars
Wynonna keeps her promise and returns to "do what I do": sing! She belts out "I Want to Know What Love Is" while Tony and Peta dance. It's probably better this way that she doesn't dance again. Lisa and Gleb follow, before Len, aka her "man of a certain age" crush, cuts in. Speaking of crushes, Tristan's injured and can't dance with a recovered Dorothy. Boo! Henry steps in for their Viennese waltz and Kristi Yamaguchi (!) and Sasha join in the middle. Lest we forget, Kristi's winning run on Season 6 inspired Dorothy, who had breast cancer then, to do the show. So much Olympic greatness in one room! Excuse me while I have a moment.
The good times continue with Andy and Sharna's redo of their manic Alice in Wonderland jazz, the encore of which ought to have been rightfully theirs in Week 2. And weirdly, besides a random "girl power" group routine and a few of them performing in Psy's number, that's it. I honestly can't remember the last time they didn't showcase every eliminated couple on the live show, whether they danced or not, only because I haven't seen every season. Why even bother with four if you're not going to acknowledge the other four? I mean, there is no reason to not feature Peanut for 10 seconds in two hours.
Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff: salsa
Jacoby still isn't as explosive like he usually is — and the "O" face doesn't help matters — but it's a fun number. He ends it — or tries to — with his trademark leap over Karina, but stalls a little to avoid the cameraman in front of them. Casualty of the Instant Dance: no camera blocking! Len calls him a breath of fresh air. Bruno says he's got the spice of life. Carrie Ann says it was a dance of a champion. And now they whip out the 10s for him. Which means everyone is going to get 30s.
Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough: jive
Dude, they get a standing O before they even start. It's fast and furious, and Kellie's flicks and kicks are on-point. Bruno says Kellie reminds him of Julianne. "The way you play with each other..." he says. Um, Julianne is his sister. Carrie Ann calls them the Wonder Twins. Len says she's the bee's knees.
Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy: jive
How did Zendaya also wind up with a jive? They get a standing O before they start too. I like the style of their jive more than Kellie's, and Zendaya's sassier and more fluid overall, but why is she dancing in sneakers again?! It's your last dance — go for all the marbles (even though you will get the 30). Carrie Ann says she made every dance special. Len says she dances with maturity. Bruno says she has a perfect performer instinct.
So nothing changes. And third place goes to... Jacoby and Karina. Mama Jones is taking it well.
"Out of all my trainers ... I've never had a woman push me like she did," Jacoby says. "When I go back [to football] and I catch a ball, I'm going to be like this [does an arm extension]."
I still think Jacoby had a slight chance at winning had he knocked it out of the park with his freestyle, but he was clearly off yesterday and today. But he was technically inferior to Kellie and Zendaya, so like Aly, this was realistically as far as he could go. A Super Bowl ring is much cooler than a Mirrorball trophy anyway.
And the winners are... Kellie and Derek!
No. 4 for Derek! Kellie's in shock. "This is amazing!" Kellie says.
Conspiracy theorists will cite online voting being down, but I think Kellie would've won regardless. The freestyle won it. Plain and simple. It's still the make-it-or-break-it dance, and theirs was the only one that left a mark. Derek overplayed his hand last season with the "super-sized" option, and he learned his lesson and had the perfect tactic this time. Their Twitter-voted encore win was just foreshadowing. And if this is actually Derek's final season (as he seems to have indicated in the skybox), what better way is there to go out?
Some mad respect for Zendaya. "I'm very proud and I'm very happy. I get to leave here with an amazing experience," she says. Zendaya's a star and it was hers to lose until last night. Val seems to suffer from Maks' finals chokes: They just can't seem to close the deal in the freestyle. But hey, last season he finished third, now second, so next season first?
What do you think? Are Kellie and Derek deserving winners? Did their freestyle clinch the deal? Were Zendaya and Val robbed? Can you believe Derek has four of these things now? Did you geek out over Kristi? Are you bummed we didn't get a few last seconds with Peanut? Who do you want on next season?
Have a great summer!
