Pittsford, N.Y. - A retired money manager stepped to the podium at the Pluta Cancer Center’s Emerald Ball Saturday night, and stunned the crowd at Oak Hill Country Club by announcing a one million dollar donation.

Ron Fielding had asked for a moment to say a few words, but did not tell anyone from the Pluta staff or family what he intended to do. He spoke briefly about his late wife’s cancer care at Pluta, then announced he was giving the million dollar gift.

The evening also included bidding on a week-long vacation on a yacht for five couples, donated by the Chesonis Family Foundation. George Karpus, who heads a local financial planning firm, was the top bidder.

Pluta Cancer Center, which has operated as an independent for years, announced this summer that it will merge with the University of Rochester Medical Center. Patients will continue to be treated by the same clinical staff at the center's current location, but will have easier access to the University's research, technology and clinical trials.
