Rochester, N.Y. - The program, called “Lose The Training Wheels,” represents a triumph for people with autism – and for their families.
Held at RIT, the program is more than just teaching kids with autism to ride bikes--although that’s an achievement.
Medical studies have proven that children with disabilities who learn to ride a bike
experience improved mental and physical health.
For many children with disabilities, what first seems impossible can be mastered-- in less than a week’s time through the use of this program. Within days of learning to ride, many children exhibit independent behaviors for the first time ever.
This achievement creates a gateway -- helping kids with autism gain assurance and self-reliance.
13WHAM's Norma Holland was there Thursday. Two videos of the program are attached to this story.
Upstate NY Families for Effective Autism Treatment, also called UNYFEAT, relies heavily on volunteers.
