New York —Mammography providers in New York State will be required to include an extra notification for patients found to have dense breast tissue thanks to a new law signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo Monday.

The new measure aims to improve breast cancer detection.

The presence of dense tissue makes it more difficult to detect the presence of cancer. Additional specific testing, which the patient could opt for after receiving notification, would likely reveal more information on possible presence of cancer.

“Early detection can save lives and this new law will give women who may be at a higher risk for breast cancer the information they need to consult with their physician about follow-up screening and other preventive measures,” Cuomo said in a statement.

The law will take effect in six months.
