LeRoy, N.Y.—Health officials say two new cases of young people exhibiting tic-like symptoms that mirror Tourette’s syndrome have been found in LeRoy.
13 WHAM News was first to report that six girls who attended LeRoy High School suffered from uncontrollable twitching in late 2011. Within a couple of months there were nearly 20 cases; most involving young women. The New York State Department of Health believed the symptoms came from a neurological ailment known as Conversion Disorder. Some of those afflicted sought the aid of independent physicians and eventually recovered according to a health department spokesman.
The LeRoy cases became national news in early 2012.
The LeRoy Central School District had water, soil and air testing done. “There are no adverse health impacts from our contaminants in the air, soil or water in or around our high school campus,” said Kim Cox, LeRoy Central School District’s Superintendent of schools.
The symptoms in the newest cases are said to be similar to what was seen previously according to health officials. The new cases involved different patients than those previously treated for these symptoms.
“DOH is aware of two LeRoy students with tic-like symptoms who are being treated by independent physicians. The environment or infection is not the cause of the students’ tics,” said Jeffrey Hammond, spokesman for the New York State Department of Health.
