Rochester, N.Y. - Leaders in the community are reminding Monroe County residents on the dangers of smoking.
With November being Lung Cancer Awareness Month, several non-profits and agencies gathered in Rochester Friday to help spread the word.
Camp Good Days, Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks and the American Cancer Society were on hand to remind the community that lung cancer is the number one cancer killer in Monroe County. The disease takes the lives of more than 400 local residents every year.
"Its unacceptable," said Gary Mervis, chairman and founder of Camp Good Days. "In 2012, we can do better and we need to do better. And not just because cancer can take your life, but because cancer can humiliate you while its doing it."
Mervis says 11,000 people die of lung cancer every week across the country.
November is also Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.
