Pulling a pet's teeth is a last resort, and only a veterinarian can determine if it's necessary. If you give your pet proper dental care, it probably won't be. Feed dogs and cats dry foods, rather than canned. The hard foods help remove tartar, and the chewing action is good exercise for teeth and gums. Next, brush the animal's teeth regularly. Use a brush and toothpaste specifically designed for dogs or cats. Periodically examine your pet's teeth for indications of trouble, including red or bleeding gums, brownish colored teeth, pus between the teeth and gums, broken teeth, or other obvious signs of problems. Strong breath odor is often one of the first reasons to suspect difficulties. Only a thorough dental exam by your vet can determine if any of your pet's teeth require extraction.
