Brockport, N.Y. – The College at Brockport will no longer host Brock the Port, an end-of-the-school-year bash that has drawn a chorus of complaints from local residents.

Over the years, the event has been marked by noise and nuisance, not to mention a grand mess in the morning.

Students, though, say the on-campus event provided a safe, alcohol-free alternative to the raucous off-campus parties.

“Everyone knows a lot of students drink that night … so now there are not a ton of people in one enclosed space, they're going to be out in the neighborhoods, so it's not a good idea,” said Noelle Hatton, a Brockport senior.

Brockport leaders say canceling the event will dissuade thousands of visitors from descending on the village that night.

“Brockport became a destination for people from Buffalo, Syracuse, Oswego, people from other towns … and we're trying to limit that,” said David Mihalyov, a Brockport spokesperson.

Mihalyov says the school is now considering providing a concert earlier in the semester and, at the end of the school year, creating some sort of food event that features local restaurants.
