Gorham, N.Y. - Critics who worried that animals would be mistreated if a dog breeding facility is allowed in Ontario County had their say Wednesday night at a town meeting.

Discussion of the facility was not originally on the agenda, but public controversy exploded as petitions circulated, and the supervisor said he allowed public comment because the matter received so much attention.

Curtis and Jolene Martin of Varick in Seneca County want to set up their business on Route 247, where they want to breed and sell puppies to dealers and retailers.

At the meeting, town officials said that a tentative permit for the facility will be voided, according to our news partners at the Democrat and Chronicle.

Lollypop Farm, on its facebook page, said: "Life for dogs in facilities like these is incredibly cruel: they are unsocialized, kept confined in cages, bred repeatedly, and often have untreated health issues. After receiving thousands of calls and emails, Town Supervisor Fred Lightfoote is recommending a moratorium on the construction of dog-breeding facilities within city limits."
