East Pembroke, N.Y. - The East Pembroke Firehouse is out of service after it was hit by a car.

Just before 4 p.m., State Police said a driver passed out or fell asleep at the wheel at East Main Road. The driver turned onto a curve, hit a sidewalk and crashed into an embankment. The impact sent the car airborne, until it crashed into the firehouse door.

"The firehouse sits a pretty good ways off the road," said Chief Don Newton. "I didn't think this would actually happen."

State Troopers said the driver was fortunate that there was no other traffic on the road, because the crash could have been much more serious.

The driver suffered only minor injuries.

Fire trucks will be housed elsewhere for the next one or two weeks until structural repairs are made to the firehouse.
