Penfield, N.Y. - A woman is dead after being hit by a garbage truck just before noon Monday.
It happened on Shadow Pines Drive in Penfield. A friend tells 13WHAM News the victim is Ann Reddington.
A spokesman for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office says Reddington was getting her mail when she was hit by a Suburban Disposal garbage truck.
The driver of the truck was backing up at the time of the accident. The truck is equipped with a beeping mechanism, a warning that sounds as it goes in reverse. Neighbors say they heard the sound, but Reddington who was walking back home from her mailbox apparently did not.
We spoke with her friends who showed up at her home Monday afternoon, unaware of the accident.
They were bringing her lunch because she recently had surgery.
One of them said she was kind and giving and supported many causes. She was active in the St. Louis Church in Pittsford and faith was a very important in her life.
Sheriff's investigators have not said whether charges will be filed.
