Rochester, N.Y. - A Rochester family already coping with the loss of a child and cancer has now lost their home.
Firefighters battled a stubborn house fire on 34 Child Street which began at 5:32 Monday morning.
Carol Maynard, who lived in the house, has been in radiation treatment for skin cancer. Since her son did not want her in the house alone during her treatments, she has been away from the house for two days.
Maynard planned to move in next week with her daughter, Sara Henry and Sara’s boyfriend and one-year-old son. All of their belongings were still in the house which burned Monday morning.
Maynard is no stranger to hardship.
Her granddaughter died after being hit by a car on Jay Street last July.
"July first we lost my niece, she was hit by a car on Jay Street," said Sara Henry. "Then my mom found out she had lupus and skin cancer. She's going through radiation treatments for that. And then on top of that - this."
The fire persisted until after 7:30 a.m. Few, if any, of the contents can be salvaged.
The city demolished the home hours later because it was a safety hazard.
