Henrietta, N.Y. - Instead of reaching for the Tylenol and NyQuil, shoppers at Lori's Natural Foods are reaching for the Elderberry.

“People, I think, are becoming a little bit more nutritionally inclined, holistically inclined,” Manger at Lori’s Natural Foods Gregg Deutschbein said.

People are so nutritionally inclined, it's hard to keep certain items on store shelves.

“It's been a really bad flu season and a lot of our Elderberry's gone, a lot of our Echinacea is gone, vitamin C, vitamin D kind of low,” Deutschbein said.

Debra Denton and her husband said they started drinking more water and tea when the flu season started, along with other remedies.

“Zinc and vitamin D are also known to boost your immune system so if you can head things off that way it tends to be beneficial,” Denton said.

Aside from herbal remedies, those who swear by a holistic lifestyle say simple hygiene, like washing your hands and letting your body rest can go a long way.

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, is even more relevant now than ever,” Deutschbein said.

Deutschbein says to keep in mind there is no cure for the flu.

Once you have the flu, these herbal remedies will more than likely relieve symptoms and perhaps shorten the duration of the flu virus.
