(CNN) Calling 911 as soon as symptoms of a heart attack begin saves lives.  That's according to the American Heart Association.

The organization along with the Journal of the American College of Cardiology recently published new guidelines for treating heart attacks.

They say how fast a doctor can treat severe heart attacks can determine the patient's prognosis.

The most common symptom of a heart attack is chest pain or discomfort.

Other indicators include a nagging stomach ache; unexplained pain in the shoulder, jaw, arm or shortness of breath.
