Avoca, N.Y. – It started with a traffic stop at 11 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

When a Steuben County Sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle on I-86 in Avoca, 11 non-English speaking people with no documentation were discovered.

They were taken to the Steuben County Jail for further investigation and identification.

New York State Police helped in the investigation.

Three of the vehicle occupants were detained by US Border Patrol for suspected human trafficking.

The other suspects were detained pending deportation hearings.

The vehicle operator was issued citations including unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

No names are being released yet.
