Rochester, N.Y. –-- Police say two graduate students were robbed at gunpoint on the University of Rochester campus Sunday night.  Police presence in the area has been stepped up as a result.

The students live at the University Park Apartments near Kendrick Road.  Around 7 p.m. Sunday authorities say two suspects entered the apartment through an unlocked door.

One of the suspects had a handgun and ordered one student to lay on the floor while the other loaded two laptops and two cell phones into a suitcase.

The suspects were wearing all dark clothing and ski masks so an exact description of each is not known.  One was said to be about 5’7” and 150lbs while the other was 5’10” to 6’ and weighed more like 200lbs according to police.  The smaller suspect had the handgun police were told.

University of Rochester Spokeswoman Sara Miller said this was the first reported robbery on campus in more than a year.  Miller said a campus security notice was sent out to students and staff; it also reminded residents folks to close and lock doors and windows.

Increased campus security patrols will be evident in that area.  Campus police are working with the Rochester Police Department on the investigation.

R.P.D. Spokesman Justin Collins reminded the community as whole to protect and hide valuables such as cell phones, smart phones, and laptops because they are all valuable and thieves view them the same as someone waving cash around in public.

The victims in this case were not harmed and live in that University Park Apartments complex with many other graduate students.

Residents, workers, and visitors to that area are urged to call 9-1-1 if they see suspicious activity or people.

If you have information that could help police catch these two suspects you’re asked to call CrimeStoppers at 423-9300.  You will remain anonymous and could receive a cash reward if your tip leads to an arrest.
